Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ)
Overview
The Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire was
developed to measure the problems that adults with rhinoconjunctivitis, both
atopic and non-atopic, experience as a result of their nose and eye symptoms. It
has 28 questions in 7 domains (activity limitations, sleep problems,
non-nose/eye symptoms, practical problems, nose symptoms, eye symptoms and
emotional function) and is in both self-administered and
interviewer-administered formats. Patients are asked to recall their experiences
during the previous week and to give their responses on a 7-point scale. The
questionnaire has excellent evaluative and discriminative properties and has
been used extensively throughout the world in a large number of clinical trials.
N.B.: The original instrument was developed in 1989 and published in the
interviewer-administered format in 1991. When we brought out the
self-administered format in 1996, the order of the domains was altered to make
the questionnaire simple for self-administration.

Standardised Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire
(RQLQ(S))
Overview
In the original Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life
Questionnaire, the 3 activities in the activity limitation domain are all
"patient-specific". This has enabled the questionnaire to focus on the activity
impairments important to each individual patient and thus allowed the
questionnaire to retain good content validity in a wide range of situations. For
instance, patients with hayfever (summer seasonal allergic rhinitis) often
experience problems with outdoor activities, those with perennial allergic
rhinitis (e.g., sensitivity to such things as house dust and animal
dander) usually have problems with indoor activities and those with non-allergic
rhinitis are bothered by activities associated with their non-allergic triggers
(e.g., cold air).
Although it is optimal to use patient-specific activities, we have developed
a version of the RQLQ in which the 3 activities are standardised for all
patients with rhinoconjunctivitis. The RQLQ(S) has been fully validated and
shows strong measurement properties.

Mini Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (MiniRQLQ)
Overview
In response to the need for a shorter version of the original
RQLQ, we have developed the MiniRQLQ which has 14 items in 5 domains (activity
limitations, practical problems, nose symptoms, eye symptoms, non-nose/eye
symptoms). The MiniRQLQ retains the 7-point response options and is
self-administered. The MiniRQLQ has been fully validated.

Nocturnal Rhinconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (Nocturnal RQLQ)
Overview
Many patients with rhinoconjunctivitis experience symptoms at night and these
interfere with getting a good night's sleep. This questionnaire has been
developed and validated to assess the specific problems that these patients
experience. The Nocturnal RQLQ has 16 items in 4 domains: problems with
sleep (4 items), symptoms during sleep time (5 items), symptoms on waking in the
morning (4 items) and practical problems (3 items).

Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire
Overview
The Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire asks
questions about problems associated with both rhinitis and conjunctivitis. For
patients with rhinitis alone (usually of non-allergic origin), we developed and
validated the Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire. It is almost exactly the
same as the RQLQ except that all questions concerning eye symptoms have been
omitted and others reworded to apply to nasal problems alone.
