ASTHMA QUALITY OF LIFE QUESTIONNAIRE FOR 12 YEARS AND OLDER (AQLQ +12)

Introduction

The Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) was developed to measure the functional impairments experienced by adults 17 years and older and the Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) was developed to measure the problems that children 7-17 years experience. In some countries, adolescents (>12 years) are included in some adult asthma clinical trials. To avoid using two separate quality of life questionnaires in these studies, we have modified the AQLQ(S) to make it suitable for both adolescents and adults. The aim of the adaptation was to ensure that the problems that are most troublesome to adolescents were included whilst making as few modifications to the original as possible. The AQLQ +12 is not ideal for adolescents because it does not include all their problems (e.g. not being able to keep up with their friends) but for large adult clinical trials, it is valid in all patients between the ages of 12 - 70 years. In studies that just include adolescents alone, the PAQLQ should be used.
